Spikklubba (eng. thorn apple), Datura stramonium, has a long history of use in different cultures both for medicinal and ceremonial purposes. It has been used to induce hallucinations, as an anesthetic and to treat various diseases. In some cultures, the plant was considered sacred and was used in religious rituals. Thorn apple has also been used, and still is today, in South Africa to treat asthma. The plant contains several toxic substances such as atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine, which are used also in modern medicine.

The toxicity varies between plants, and even between different parts of a plant - it can even differ between one leaf and another! Poisoning with thorn apple can cause symptoms such as dry mouth, facial flushing, palpitations, dizziness, dilated pupils, blurred vision, anxiety, hallucinations and, in the worst cases, unconsciousness and muscle damage, which can be fatal.
