Champlève enammelled beads

Champlevé is an ancient enameling technique that creates stunning, colorful designs on metal surfaces, often used in decorative arts and jewelry. The champlevé technique typically demands very skilled craftsmanship due to its intricate and labor-intensive nature. The process involves several steps that require precision and expertise, including carving channels into a metal base, filling it with enamel, and firing it multiple times—typically around 8 to 10 firings—to build up layers of enamel. This meticulous work not only requires a critical eye for detail but also a deep understanding of materials and techniques to achieve the desired finish and color blending.

The combination of skill and time investment makes champlevé a respected art form, particularly in high-quality decorative items like jewelry and Fabergé eggs, where craftsmanship is paramount.

Key Features of Champlevé Beads

Vibrant Colors

The technique allows for a variety of opaque and transparent enamels, resulting in eye-catching hues.

Durability

The enamel is fused directly to the metal, ensuring a long-lasting finish.

Unique Patterns

The carved designs can range from geometric shapes to intricate motifs, offering a wide variety of styles.

Historical Significance

Champlevé was also used in the creation of exquisite Fabergé eggs, showcasing its versatility and beauty. For instance, the Twelve Monogram Egg features intricate champlevé enamel work, demonstrating the technique's potential for creating luxurious and detailed designs.

Pearls

Yes, we do! We use freshwater pearls in our jewelry.

Origin

Real pearls, or natural pearls, (freshwater and saltwater) are organic gems produced by mollusks, while imitation pearls are man-made.

Value

Real pearls (freshwater and saltwater pearls) are the most valuable. Imitation pearls are cheaper.

Durability

Real pearls are more durable than most imitation pearls.

Appearance

Real pearls often have slight imperfections and variations, while imitation pearls tend to be more uniform in shape and color.

Luster

Real pearls have a higher luster than imitation pearls.

Here are some key ways to tell if a pearl is genuine or imitation:

The Tooth Test:

Gently rub the pearl against your teeth. A real pearl will feel slightly gritty or rough, while an imitation will feel smooth.

Examine the Surface:

Real pearls often have slight imperfections and variations, while fake pearls tend to be perfectly smooth and uniform.

Check the Luster:

Genuine pearls have a deep, dimensional glow. Fake pearls often have a dull, chalky, or overly glossy appearance.

Look at the Drill Hole:

In real pearls, the drill hole edges are usually clean. Fake pearls may show chipping around the hole.

The Pearl Powder Test:

Gently rub two pearls together. Real pearls will produce a fine, white powder. Fake pearls will not.

Size and Weight:

Real pearls are often slightly different sizes. They also tend to be heavier than plastic imitations.

Magnification:

Under magnification, real pearls show a grained texture. Fakes appear smoother.

Flame Test:

When exposed to flame briefly, real pearls remain intact while many fakes will melt or emit an odor.

Yes, they are indeed both real pearls- There are two major types of natural pearls, or real pearls: freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls.

Freshwater Pearls

  • Produced by freshwater mussels in lakes and rivers
  • Come in a variety of shapes and colors
  • Typically smaller than saltwater pearls
  • Often have a softer luster compared to saltwater pearls

Saltwater Pearls

  • Produced by oysters in oceans
  • Types include Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls
  • Known for their high luster and round shape
  • Often larger than freshwater pearls

Freshwater pearls have emerged as an exceptional choice for pearl enthusiasts, offering a perfect blend of quality, variety, and value. Here's why freshwater pearls stand out:

Versatility

Freshwater pearls come in an impressive array of shapes, sizes, and colors, making them incredibly versatile for jewelry design. From classic round shapes to unique baroque forms, freshwater pearls offer something for every taste and style.

Superior Nacre Quality

One of the most significant advantages of freshwater pearls is their thick nacre. This substantial coating contributes to their durability and lustrous appearance, often rivaling or even surpassing that of their saltwater counterparts.

Historical Value

Interestingly, the value of freshwater pearls has not always been lower than saltwater pearls. In fact, during certain periods in history, freshwater pearls were more highly prized and expensive than saltwater pearls. This fluctuation in value demonstrates the dynamic nature of the pearl market and the inherent worth of freshwater pearls.

Increasing Quality

Advancements in pearl farming have led to the production of high-quality freshwater pearls that can compete with the finest saltwater varieties. Cultivators have made significant strides in producing large, round freshwater pearls that rival Akoya and South Sea pearls in appearance.

Affordability

Freshwater pearls offer exceptional value without compromising on beauty or quality. This accessibility has made them a favorite among pearl lovers.

Sustainability and Ethics

Last but not least, freshwater pearl farming often has a lower environmental impact compared to saltwater operations, making them a better option for eco-conscious consumers.

In conclusion, freshwater pearls offer a compelling combination of quality, variety, and value. Their rich history of fluctuating desirability, coupled with modern advancements in cultivation, positions them as an excellent choice for jewelry wearers and pearl lovers. As the pearl market continues to evolve, freshwater pearls stand poised to potentially reclaim their position as some of the most sought-after gems in the world.
