Fennel was praised already by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Prometheus carried the fire he had stolen from the gods from Mount Olympus to earth using a giant stalk of fennel. Fennel tea was thought to give courage to warriors before battle. Nowadays is also said to aid digestion. In herbal medicine, fennel is also used to treat coughs, as it is considered an expectorant.

Fennel was widely believed to be magical, and was often grown in the gardens of medieval monasteries. Hildegard von Bingen recommended it for depression. In an 1842 poem, ‘The Goblet of Life’, the author refers to fennel several times, including as something that in older times was thought to restore lost sight.
