Another name given to the plant is elfin thyme. Wild thyme contains thymol, which has antiseptic properties. It is also considered an expectorant and is sometimes used as an ingredient in cough medicine. Among singers, tea of thyme is said to help a dry throat.

Wild thyme has also been called "Jungfru Marie sänghalm" (Virgin Mary's bedstraw) or "vårfru sängehalm" (Our Lady's bedstraw). Shakespeare, after naming more flowers, continues the above quote from A Midsummer Night's Dream with:

"There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,

Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;"
