Vänderot tea mug (Swedish text on print)

Valerian has been used medicinally since at least ancient Greece. The plant was described by Hippocrates and recommended by Galenos, the dominant medical authority for 1300 years, for insomnia. In medieval Sweden, it was stuffed into the groom's wedding clothes to ward off the elves.

It is said that the root of the valerian can turn in the soil, so that what was a root one year becomes a stalk the next. It was a magical plant in Swedish folklore, seen as a means of protection against evil. One of many old verses reads:

"February daphne and valerian stand against all evil."

Today valerian is used as a tranquilliser.
