Magic tea cup that reveals information about the herb Johannesört (St John's wort) when heated.

***

St John's wort is a magical herb with a special relationship to midsummer, which is its flowering time. It has been said that the herb originated from the blood of John the Baptist, alternatively from the blood of Christ - johannesblöda (John’s blood) and mannamod (man's blood) are old Swedish names for the plant. Midsummer is also the time of the birth of John the Baptist, or the birth of the coming king of winter, the King of the holly. The St John's wort once had power to drive away the evil one himself - Fan's flykt (the Devil’s flight)  is another old local name.

A bouquet of St John's Wort in the window would keep ghosts away from the house and a bonfire of St John's wort would protect the crops. One legend has it that if you step on St John's wort after sunset, you risk being swept up on the back of an enchanted horse, which will then race across the sky until, at sunrise, it throws off its exhausted rider.

In some studies, St John's wort has shown effect against depression.
