The rune Raido has been ascribed a variety of meanings, including journey, ride, long journey on horseback, and chariot or chariot wheel. The rune may have served as a kind of travel charm, protecting both the living and the dead.
The Old Norse word reid can mean either a wheeled vehicle or thunder. There is therefore some reason to believe that the rune is linked to the god Thor; the thunder was said to be caused by his chariot, which was pulled by two goats, rattling across the sky. Thor is closely associated with the oak, which is the tree most often struck by lightning, and which is used to build ships with which to go on long journeys, and he is also the god of thunder. One source mentions, somewhat cryptically, regarding the rune Raido, that Regin, the master smith who was the foster father of Sigurd and brother of the dragon Fafnir, forged the finest sword, and perhaps it is from this that the rune has been given the interpretation of movement and work.
