Its name, Achillea millefolium, refers to Achilles, who is said to have treated the wounds of his friends with yarrow during the siege of Troy.

Yarrow decoctions have been used to treat diarrhoea, relieve pain and rheumatism, and to reduce nosebleeds, heavy menstruation or blood in the urine. Yarrow has also been used as an abortifacient.

Usually, the parts of the plant that grow above ground are used, for example, as herbal tea.
