Henbane, Hyoscyamus niger, is a legendary plant that has been cultivated for thousands of years as a medicinal plant for its analgesic and antispasmodic properties. It has traditionally been used to treat toothache by inhaling the smoke from glowing seeds. It has also been used as an intoxicant and was considered a sacred plant. The Oracle of Delphi is believed to have spoken her words of wisdom under the influence of the vapors of henbane and it is also said to have been used in 'witch ointments', hallucinogenic ointments, which gave people the sensation of being able to fly.

The active alkaloids in henbane are still used today in the pharmaceutical industry. Because of its strong toxicity, henbane was also popular with medieval poisoners. Throughout history, henbane has played a complex and fascinating role in medicine, folklore and witchcraft.
