Fingerborgsblomma (Eng. Foxglove), Digitalis purpurea, has been used as a medicinal plant since ancient times. Its main medicinal use is to extract digitalis, a substance used to treat heart diseases such as heart failure and certain types of arrhythmia. Digitalis can increase the contractility of the heart and regulate the heart rate. The first documented use of foxglove for medicinal purposes was in the 18th century by the English physician William Withering, who discovered its effect on heart failure.

All parts of the plant, especially the leaves and seeds, contain toxic substances that can be dangerous if ingested. Symptoms of poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, heart arrhythmias and in severe cases even death.
