The rune Ehwaz means horse. Of the horse it is said that it is a joy for princes, it stands for pride and is an eternal source of comfort for the restless. Horses have been considered sacred since ancient times, and in a Norse context they are associated with the god Frey in particular. The story of the horse's devotion to this deity is manifested in Hrafnkel's saga.

According to Tacitus, horses were used to confirm divinations. Horses were said to have insight into the councils of the gods. The horse is also the sacred companion of the archetypal solar hero, and the rune Ehwaz thus moreover suggests companionship, a prerequisite for the exploits of the invulnerable solar hero.
