The original meaning of this rune is “birch”, or possibly "poplar". The birch, which, according to the rune, “has the greenest leaves”, was a sacred tree, strongly associated with spring and its fertility rites. On the first of May, the gates and doorways were decorated with green leaves in celebration of spring in historical Sweden. In Norse mythology, the goddess of spring was Idun, and as such she represented youth, vitality and beauty, all symbols of nature's rebirth. It was Idun's apples that bestowed eternal youth to the Norse gods.

Another goddess strongly associated with fertility is of course the Nordic love goddess, Freyja.

The rune Berkana corresponds to the letter B.
