Nimue & The Crystal Cave of Sleep

Nimue & The Crystal Cave of Sleep

Nimue, also known as Viviane, is a magician from Arthurian legend. She is best known as the woman who sealed the wizard Merlin in a crystal cave of sleep, or in a tree, and put him under a spell. Nimue is sometimes also referred to as the Lady of the Lake, who is a water fairy and enchantress in the Arthurian legend.

Nimue is said to have been an apprentice to Merlin, that he fell in love with her, and that she learned everything he knew about magic before using one of his own spells against him. She is also known for giving King Arthur his sword Excalibur, and for being the foster mother of Lancelot. Some believe she is a transformed Welsh sea elf, one of the Gwragedd Annwn (wives or fairies of the underworld), a Celtic water goddess named Covianna, or an Irish goddess of the underworld called Bé Finn.
